The Atlantic Aviation Group are pleased to offer our Aircraft Maintenance Licence CAT A Training Programme in partnership with the Limerick and Clare Education Training Board. The Aircraft Maintenance Traineeship has been developed to satisfy the skill and knowledge requirements for an EASA Part 66 Cat A Aircraft Maintenance Engineers Licence and to furnish the trainee with the essential disciplines to work competently and safely within the Aircraft Maintenance Environment.

What does an Aircraft Maintenance Technician (CAT A Mechanic) do?

An Aircraft Maintenance Technician (CAT A Mechanic) typically performs minor maintenance tasks and part replacements that may be required and to subsequently certify these tasks.  Aircraft Maintenance Technicians (CAT A mechanics) are permitted to perform various maintenance tasks during heavy and line maintenance on aircraft systems and components.  The aviation industry is regulated in Europe by the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), in America by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and in Ireland, by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA).

What does the Traineeship cover?

The course includes Theory, Workshop Practical Training, Aircraft Practical Training and On the Job Experience, with On the Job Experience taking place in Atlantic Aviation Group’s Shannon facility. At the end of the Training Programme, successful trainees will be able to apply to the  Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) for their EASA Cat A Aircraft Maintenance License.

Learn from the best

Our qualified trainers and assessors use proven training methods and goals with each student. We believe that quality speaks for itself, whether it is in Aircraft Maintenance or in training our staff. The high quality of our service is recognised throughout the industry.

What is involved?

This training programme is for learners interested in developing a career in aircraft maintenance. The programme is designed to fulfil the basic theoretical training, workshop training and practical experience requirements to apply for an EASA Part 66 Category A – Aircraft Maintenance Licence. Throughout the traineeship, learners will demonstrate a detailed knowledge of the rules, regulations and legislation surrounding aircraft maintenance.

Phase 1 – Initial Training

The theory training is divided into 12 modules/subjects and is intermixed with practical training and examinations. This phase is 43 weeks in duration. The 12 theory modules that trainees undertake are as follows:

Module 1: Mathematics

Mathematics Arithmetic, simple algebra and geometry.

Module 2: Physics

Matter, Mechanics, statics, kinetics (Linear movement, rotational movement, periodic motion, theory of vibration and velocity ratio), dynamics (mass, momentum), fluid, thermodynamics (temperature, heat capacity, volumetric expansion).

Module 3: Electrical Fundamentals

Electron theory, electrical terminology, generation of electricity, DC sources of electricity and AC theory.

Module 4: Digital Techniques

Electronic instrument systems and basic computer structure.

Module 5: Materials and Hardware

This module covers the various materials, nuts, bolts and different types of electrical wiring used in the construction and maintenance of aircraft.

Module 6: Maintenance Practices

The trainee will learn all the safety precautions, tools, engineering drawings, diagrams and standards, sheet metal work and methods used to maintain aircraft

Module 7: Basic Aerodynamics

Physics of the atmosphere aerodynamics (airflow around a body aerofoil contamination including ice, snow and frost), theory of flight and flight stability and dynamics (longitudinal, lateral and directional stability).

Module 8: Human Factors

How humans are affected by and interact with their environment, human error, human performance and hazards in the workplace are covered in this module.

Module 9: Aviation Legislation

The role of the different legislative bodies and the laws governing aviation.

Module 10: Aeroplane Aerodynamics, Structures & Systems

Hydraulic power, flight controls, fuel systems, instruments, air conditioning and cabin pressurisation, airframe structures and other aircraft systems are covered in this module.

Module 11: Gas Turbine Engines

Fundamentals of gas turbine engines, engine performance, engine construction including all the sub systems that comprise to make gas turbine engine.

Module 12: Propellers

Fundamentals of propeller operation, construction, pitch control and propeller maintenance.

Phase 2 – Practical Training (On-the-Job)

In this phase all the theory and practical training are consolidated on the aircraft and support workshops. Candidates will carry out duties on all areas of an aircraft such as cabin, wings, engines etc. Maintenance activities are carried out under the guidance of Production Staff and the Training Academy within the Atlantic Aviation Group facility. The trainees will put into practice all they have learned for the remainder of their training period and gather experience in all areas of aircraft maintenance. On-The-Job training assessments along with regular reviews will be conducted to assess trainees.

Examinations

Examinations are conducted at the end of each module of training throughout the Training Programme. Examinations are mostly in multiple choice formats with the pass mark for each module being set by European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) at 75%.

How long does it take?

This is a 27-month traineeship, combing learning in an education and training setting and in the workplace with Atlantic Aviation Group.

What qualification do I get when I complete the Traineeship?

At the end of the Training Programme, successful trainees will be able to apply to the Irish Aviation Authority for their EASA Cat A Aircraft Maintenance License. This License can be upgraded to a B1/ B2 with more examinations and experience. These qualifications are also recognized by colleges and universities which can give you a reduction in the numbers of years
that you might be required to attend.

Entry Requirements

  • Candidates must be over 17 years of age to be considered for the Traineeship Programme.
  • Successful candidates for the Limerick & Clare Education & Training Board / Atlantic Aviation Group Aircraft Maintenance Licence Programme should have a passed their Leaving Certificate with a minimum Grade C in Ordinary level Math’s.
  • For Leaving Cert 2017 onward the candidate should have passed the Leaving Cert with a minimum of a H5 or O4 in Math’s.
  • A pass grade in a technical subject would be an advantage.
  • Suitable candidates will be invited to undergo an assessment day which comprises of two aptitude tests, a practical assessment and an interview. To be considered for a position on the Training Programme you must successfully pass all stages.
  • Reference checks and a medical examination are also required before an offer of placement can be made.
  • Security checks are also part of the standard recruitment procedure.

What career opportunities are available to me on completion of the programme?

Trainees have a wide range of opportunities available to them upon completion of this programme. Many Trainees stay with Atlantic Aviation Group, further developing their skills and qualifications and establishing their career in aircraft maintenance.
